Old words, new story

Today was such a tragic day for the world. 20 children killed in Connecticut! Hearing the news jogged many emotions in the middle of a busy day. I had been prepping info on Mykola Lyontovich (composer of "Carol of the Bells") and found out he was a martyr in Ukraine- killed in 1921 by a Soviet soldier.

The news of this tragedy fit too closely with another Bells piece we are performing in the Holiday concert- "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day". It's a Contemporary piece that uses a 17th century text by Henry Wadworth Lonfellow (spppp(.

Write text.

My students love this piece, and we haven't worked on it much, but now it has a raw, relevant truth which to me is what music is all about.
